All the little things…

We’ve been away for our Pretty Vintage Weekend. I think you’re going to hear plenty about it over the next few weeks…

What I’ve been reflecting on since I got back is all the little things that went towards making it such a wonderful, wonderful weekend, such as…

All the effort that went into achieving the perfect look – hunting out those wedding tiaras, browsing online (those Chinese sites got quite a bashing), a trip to the hairdressers for the perfect up-do, the high heeled shoe agony, the gloves and chokers and sparkly belts…

wine glass charmsThe thoughtful birthday presents – the family tree with all the girls’ names spelt right, the necklace with those special words from Hunchback that mean such a lot and evoke so many memories…gifts that take time and effort and thought and planning…

The little gifts for everyone – the flowers with a clip for a photo that proved so useful in the Drown the Clown, the individualised wine glass charms featuring a crown, a plane, a bike, a magic wand, a mask, a castle…and of course, handcuffs!

The party bag equivalent from the hostess to the guests – a vintage cup and saucer  – all different – containing a homemade candle (which must have taken a good while), wrapped in vintage fabric with a brown card tag.

maidsThe preparation behind each meal – we worked in groups having been allocated one meal each. We planned, we thought carefully. We had French maids serving us coffee and cake on our arrival and a breakfast brunch that would have fed a rugby team! And then there was the afternoon tea – tiny quiches, cucumber sandwiches with cucumber from the allotment, scones cut carefully into quarters, strawberries dipped in white chocolate with a blueberry on the top…

And you know what? It is all in the detail. The sashes around the chairs, the pretty serviettes, the small vases of flowers, the cake stands, the 90 year old cups and saucers…it was all there.

It all takes effort, of course it does. Dressing up like a princess takes effort. Getting everything just right takes effort.

But believe me, it is so worth it.
